Overshadow

A tech demo with a story arc rather than a game. It starts as an ordinary afternoon on a city boulevard: people on their way somewhere, traffic stopping at the lights, someone texting you about coffee. Then the ground hums, the birds go, car alarms start, and every phone in the street goes off at once. The clouds wind into a vortex and a mothership a kilometre across comes down through it, and its shadow takes the sun off the whole city. When the shooting starts, run for the Civil Defence Directorate at the north end of the street. Its blast door opens for the last few people to reach it, and below is a room of screens that can see everything. Everything is generated in code: the city, the people, the ships and every sound. The broadcast voice is your browser’s speech synthesiser. Best with headphones, a mouse and a desktop graphics card.
